Approximately 106,000 model-year 2016-19 BMX X1 SUVs are being recalled due to issues with the B-pillar. The B-pillar is part of the SUV frame where the front doors latch onto their locks, and it sits between the front passengers and the rear seat. In the event of a crash where an occupant’s head contacts the B-pillar, the pillar may not absorb an adequate amount of the impact as required by federal safety standards, increasing the risk of injury.

BMW is expected to begin notifying owners on July 2. Owners can call the automaker at 800-525-7417 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 to learn more.

The remedy is still under development. The automaker will notify owners again when a fix has been made available.

Vehicle manufacturers are legally required to repair any recalled issues or replace the defective part for free under the Highway Safety Act of 1970. If the dealership refuses to fix the problem or attempts to charge you for the repair, contact the manufacturer immediately.
