Approximately 3,100 model-year 2020 Toyota Highlanders and Highlander Hybrids are being recalled due to airbag issues. Incorrect seat trim covers on one or both of the front seats can prevent the seat-mounted side airbag from deploying properly, increasing the risk of injury in the event of a crash.

Toyota will begin notifying owners on Dec. 13. Owners can call the automaker at 888-270-9371 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 to learn more.

To resolve the issue, dealers will inspect the front seats and replace the seat trim covers, as necessary.

Vehicle manufacturers are legally required to repair any recalled issues or replace the defective part for free under the Highway Safety Act of 1970. If the dealership refuses to fix the problem or attempts to charge you for the repair, contact the manufacturer immediately.
