Toyota is recalling approximately 227,490 Camry sedans due to brake issues. A faulty part within the braking system’s vacuum pump could break, causing the vacuum pump to fail, resulting in a sudden loss of power braking assist and increasing the risk of a crash.

Toyota will begin mailing notification letters to owners of affected vehicles on Dec. 16. Owners may contact the automaker at 800-331-4331 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle safety hotline at 888-327-4236 to learn more.

To solve the problem, dealers will repair or replace the vacuum pump, as necessary.

Vehicle manufacturers are legally required to repair any recalled issues or replace the defective part for free under the Highway Safety Act of 1970. If the dealership refuses to fix the problem or attempts to charge you for the repair, contact the manufacturer immediately.
