Approximately 830 model-year 2019 Kia Forte sedans are being recalled due to driveshaft issues. The left front axle driveshaft may not have been heat-treated, which can cause it to break. A broken driveshaft can result in a sudden loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.

Kia began notifying owners on Sept. 2. Owners can call the automaker at 800-333-4542 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 to learn more.

To fix the problem, dealers will inspect the left front axle driveshaft for a heat treatment verification code, and replace it if the code is missing.

Vehicle manufacturers are legally required to repair any recalled issues or replace the defective part for free under the Highway Safety Act of 1970. If the dealership refuses to fix the problem or attempts to charge you for the repair, contact the manufacturer immediately.
