Approximately 7,200 model-year 2019-20 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 pickup trucks equipped with Advantage trifold soft tonneau covers are being recalled due to installation issues. The original instructions may be difficult to follow, possibly resulting in the cover being installed incorrectly and detaching from the truck bed to become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.

Chevrolet and GMC manufacturer GM did not immediately announce an owner notification schedule. Owners can call Chevrolet at 800-630-2438, GMC at 800-462-8782 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 to learn more.

To fix the problem, dealers will provide a cover tether kit, improved instructions, and additional labeling.

Vehicle manufacturers are legally required to repair any recalled issues or replace the defective part for free under the Highway Safety Act of 1970. If the dealership refuses to fix the problem or attempts to charge you for the repair, contact the manufacturer immediately.
