Approximately 5,100 model-year 2019-20 BMW 230i, M240i, M2 Competition, 430i, 440i, and M4 coupes, and model-year 2019 330i xDrive Sports Wagons are being recalled due to airbag issues. The driver and passenger knee airbag modules may have been improperly folded and assembled, which could cause the airbags to become damaged during inflation, preventing the full safety benefit and increasing the risk of injury in the event of a crash.

BMW will begin notifying owners on July 2. Owners can call the automaker at 800-525-7417 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 to learn more.

To fix the problem, dealers will replace the knee airbag modules.

Vehicle manufacturers are legally required to repair any recalled issues or replace the defective part for free under the Highway Safety Act of 1970. If the dealership refuses to fix the problem or attempts to charge you for the repair, contact the manufacturer immediately.
