Approximately 14,100 model-year 2015-16 Tesla Model X SUVs are being recalled because the aluminum bolts that attach the power steering gear assist motor to the gear housing may corrode and fracture, resulting in a reduction or complete loss of power steering assist and increasing the risk of a crash.

Tesla says it will contact owners to schedule a service appointment when parts become available. Owners can call the automaker at 877-798-3752 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 to learn more.

To remedy the issue, Tesla Service Centers will replace the steering gear mounting bolts with coated steel bolts, and add a corrosion preventive sealer to the steering gear motor housing and motor connection bolts. If the mounting bolts are found to be broken or break during removal, a new steering gear will also be installed.

Vehicle manufacturers are legally required to repair any recalled issues or replace the defective part for free under the Highway Safety Act of 1970. If the dealership refuses to fix the problem or attempts to charge you for the repair, contact the manufacturer immediately.
