Hyundai is recalling 53,142 model-year 2021-2022 Santa Fe, Sonata, Veloster N, 2022 Santa Cruz, Elantra N, and Kona N vehicles equipped with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. A transmission oil pump malfunction could trigger an improper fail-safe model reaction that causes the transmission to disengage, which can result in a complete loss of drive power. A loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on December 5, 2022. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 855-371-9460 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle safety hotline at 888-327-4236 to learn more.

To fix the problem, dealers will inspect and replace the transmission, as necessary.  Dealers will also update the transmission control unit software.

Vehicle manufacturers are legally required to repair any recalled issues or replace the defective part for free under the Highway Safety Act of 1970. If the dealership refuses to fix the problem or attempts to charge you for the repair, contact the manufacturer immediately.
