Approximately 9,200 model-year 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander plug-in hybrid SUVs and Outlander Sport SUVs, model-year 2018-19 Eclipse Cross SUVs, and model-year 2017-18 Outlander SUV’s, all equipped with forward collision mitigation with pedestrian detection are being recalled due to incorrect software. The forward collision mitigation electronic unit may apply braking for longer than needed, even after a pedestrian is no longer detected, resulting in rapid deceleration and increasing the risk of a rear-end collision.
Mitsubishi will begin notifying owners on Oct 16. Owners can call the automaker at 888-648-7820 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 to learn more.
To fix the problem, dealers will reprogram the forward collision mitigation ECU software with updated software.
Vehicle manufacturers are legally required to repair any recalled issues or replace the defective part for free under the Highway Safety Act of 1970. If the dealership refuses to fix the recall problem or attempts to charge you for the repair, contact the manufacturer immediately.
