Approximately 220 model-year 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class and GLS-Class SUVs are being recalled because the seams on the rear crossmember may have been insufficiently welded. This may allow cracks to form when towing, possibly causing the rear crossmember to detach and become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.
Mercedes-Benz will begin notifying owners on May 19. Owners can call the automaker at 800-367-6372 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 to learn more.
To remedy the issue, dealers will replace the rear crossmember.
Vehicle manufacturers are legally required to repair any recalled issues or replace the defective part for free under the Highway Safety Act of 1970. If the dealership refuses to fix the problem or attempts to charge you for the repair, contact the manufacturer immediately.
