Honda has announced a recall on approximately 50,500 model-year 2018-19 Odyssey minivans due to battery issues. Loose battery terminal connections or a degraded battery may cause the transmission control unit to unexpectedly reboot, causing the transmission to shift to Park which could damage the parking rod, allowing the vehicle to roll when parked, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.
Honda will begin notifying owners on June 1. Owners can call the automaker at 888-234-2138 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 to learn more.
To fix the problem, dealers will ensure the battery terminal connections are secure, inspect the effectiveness of the parking rod, and update the TCU software.
Vehicle manufacturers are legally required to repair any recalled issues or replace the defective part for free under the Highway Safety Act of 1970. If the dealership refuses to fix the problem or attempts to charge you for the repair, contact the manufacturer immediately.
