Kia is recalling over 28,000 model-year 2016 Sedona minivans and Sorento SUVs due to a faulty shift lever. The shift lock lever might not return to the locked position after the shift lever is moved. As a result, the shift lever can be moved out of Park and into any gear position without pressing the brake pedal first, regardless of whether the ignition is on or off. This could allow the vehicle to roll away, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on October 7, 2022. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 800-333-4542 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle safety hotline at 888-327-4236 to learn more.

To fix the problem, dealers will inspect and repair the faulty shift lock lever, if necessary.

Vehicle manufacturers are legally required to repair any recalled issues or replace the defective part for free under the Highway Safety Act of 1970. If the dealership refuses to fix the problem or attempts to charge you for the repair, contact the manufacturer immediately.
