Porsche is recalling more than 39,000 model-year 2017-18 Macan and Macan GTS variants and model-year 2015-18 Macan S and Macan Turbo variants due to issues with the front passenger seat. The front passenger seat occupancy sensor mat, a component that helps detect whether someone is sitting in the front passenger seat, may degrade and fail to detect if a passenger is present. As a result, the airbag may not deploy during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

The recall was expected to begin on May 2. Owners can call Porsche at 800-767-7243 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle safety hotline at 888-327-4236 to learn more.

To remedy the issue, dealers will replace the sensor mat and seat cushion.

Vehicle manufacturers are legally required to repair any recalled issues or replace the defective part for free under the Highway Safety Act of 1970. If the dealership refuses to fix the problem or attempts to charge you for the repair, contact the manufacturer immediately.
