Approximately 3,700 model-year 2015-16 Kia Soul EV electric hatchbacks are being recalled because the parking mechanism may become damaged if the driver moves the gear selector into Park before coming to a complete stop. If the mechanism is damaged, unintended vehicle movement may occur when the gear selector is in Park and the parking brake is not applied, increasing the risk of injury or a crash.
Kia will begin notifying owners on Aug. 7. Owners can call the automaker at 800-333-4542 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 to learn more.
To fix the problem, dealers will update the electronic control software.
Vehicle manufacturers are legally required to repair any recalled issues or replace the defective part for free under the Highway Safety Act of 1970. If the dealership refuses to fix the problem or attempts to charge you for the repair, contact the manufacturer immediately.
