Approximately 9,900 model-year 2017-19 Mini Countryman hatchbacks are being recalled due to an issue with the crash protection plate. A crash protection plate near the high-pressure fuel pump may be missing, which could result in a fuel leak or fire in the event of a crash.

Mini manufacturer BMW will begin notifying owners on Oct 15. Owners can call Mini at 866-825-1525 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 to learn more.

To fix the problem, dealers will install a crash protection plate if needed.

Vehicle manufacturers are legally required to repair any recalled issues or replace the defective part for free under the Highway Safety Act of 1970. If the dealership refuses to fix the problem or attempts to charge you for the repair, contact the manufacturer immediately.
