Most common MINI warranty defects

MINI shares engines, electronics and brake hardware with BMW, but on recent MINIs the problems cluster in different places: the high-voltage battery in the 2020–2024 Cooper SE, the integrated brake module and new infotainment head unit in the redesigned 2025 Cooper and Countryman, and assembly-quality recalls on the larger 2025 Countryman. Because several of these faults are intermittent or software-driven, the strongest MINI claims are built on repair orders that describe the same symptom, in the owner’s words, every time.

Cooper SE high-voltage battery recalls (2020–2024)

The high-voltage battery in the 2020–2024 two-door Cooper SE was recalled twice in 2024. Recall 24V-302 covers Cooper SE models whose battery housing may not have been sealed properly, allowing water to enter the battery; dealers leak-test and repair it. Recall 24V-612 covers 12,535 2020–2024 Cooper SE vehicles because faults in the battery or high-voltage system can cause a short circuit. MINI told owners that if a warning message appears, they should park outside and away from structures until the remedy, a software update, is done. A warning that returns after that update, or a battery that has to be opened more than once, is the kind of repeat history that matters. See our page on the Cooper SE recall 24V-612.

Integrated brake module recalls on the 2025 Cooper and Countryman

The redesigned 2025 Cooper and Countryman use the same integrated brake system that drove BMW’s largest recent recalls. Recall 24V-104 listed the 2025 MINI Cooper, Cooper S and Countryman because the module can malfunction and cut power brake assist or disable ABS and Dynamic Stability Control. Recall 24V-697 added 2025 Countryman S ALL4, John Cooper Works Countryman ALL4 and Hardtop 2 Door Cooper and Cooper S models after broken servomotor welds were found to cause loss of brake assist and rear braking. A further campaign, 26V-422, filed in July 2026, again lists the 2025 Cooper S and Countryman S ALL4 for inspection and possible replacement. Brake warnings on a nearly new MINI are a safety issue, and repeat visits deserve careful records. See the 26V-422 integrated brake recall.

Head-unit resets and blank screens on the new Cooper and Countryman

The 2025-and-later Cooper 2 Door, Cooper 4 Door, Cooper Convertible and Countryman, including the electric Countryman, use a new head unit that MINI calls the HU-H6. A MINI service bulletin issued in December 2025 (SI M65 12 25) lists head-unit resets, start-up delays over 30 seconds, failed start-up, navigation, Bluetooth, audio and voice-assistant problems, and missing displays, radio stations, camera images or apps. MINI attributes them to “unfavorable software” and directs technicians to reprogram the whole vehicle. A separate bulletin (SI M65 08 25) covers a voice assistant that stopped working after Remote Software Upgrade 03/25. Because missing camera images are on that list, a recurring blank screen is more than an annoyance. Bulletins are not recalls, but they confirm the problem is known.

2025–2026 Countryman assembly and restraint recalls

The larger Countryman that launched for 2025 has collected a string of build-quality campaigns. Recall 24V-711 covers 2025 Countryman S ALL4 models whose bolts connecting the front body structure to the chassis may not have been tightened properly. Recall 24V-340 covers 2025 Countryman S ALL4 and John Cooper Works Countryman ALL4 models whose rear door armrest bracket may detach during a side airbag deployment. Recall 25V-616 replaces both front seat belt retractors on 2025–2026 Countryman S ALL4, 2025 Countryman SE ALL4 and some Cooper and Cooper Convertible models, and recall 25V-717 replaces rear retractors on 2026 Countryman S ALL4 models that do not lock as intended. Each campaign is another dealer visit, and together with the brake recalls they can add up to meaningful time out of service. See the 24V-711 Countryman structure recall.

Countryman SE ALL4 plug-in hybrid battery recalls (2020–2021)

Before the current generation, the Countryman SE ALL4 was a plug-in hybrid, and its battery cells were caught up in two 2020 campaigns shared with BMW plug-ins. Recall 20V-490 covers 2020 Countryman SE ALL4 models in which loose welding beads could form a conductive path between battery cells and cause a short circuit. Recall 20V-601 covers 2020–2021 Countryman SE ALL4 models because debris may have entered the battery cells during production; until the module inspection or replacement was done, drivers were told not to charge the vehicle and not to use manual or sport mode or the shift paddles. These are older vehicles, but MINI’s 2021 warranty covered the plug-in hybrid’s high-voltage battery for 8 years or 80,000 miles, well beyond the basic warranty. See the 2020–2021 Countryman SE recall.

Signs your MINI may be a lemon

  • A Cooper SE warning that keeps coming back. A high-voltage warning returns after the 24V-612 software update, or the battery has needed more than one repair.
  • Brake or DSC warnings on a 2025 MINI. Your new Cooper or Countryman shows brake-system warnings again after the integrated brake module was inspected or replaced.
  • A center screen that reboots or goes blank. The head unit restarts, takes too long to start, or loses the camera image, Bluetooth or navigation after a dealer reprogramming or a Remote Software Upgrade.
  • Being told to reset it yourself. The dealer’s only fix is a long-press head-unit reset or a 12-volt battery disconnect, and the fault returns.
  • A first-year Countryman that is rarely home. Structure, seat belt, airbag-trim and brake recalls on top of other warranty repairs keep a 2025 or 2026 Countryman at the dealer for days at a time.

What MINI’s warranty means for a claim

MINI’s 2025 model-year New Passenger Car Limited Warranty runs 48 months or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first, and includes diagnosis as well as parts and labor. The high-voltage traction battery in MINI’s battery-electric models is covered for 8 years or 100,000 miles, rust perforation is covered for 12 years with unlimited mileage, and complimentary scheduled maintenance covers the first 36 months or 36,000 miles. MINI Certified Pre-Owned vehicles add one year of coverage with unlimited miles after the 4-year/50,000-mile warranty expires.

MINI’s own warranty terms say repairs do not extend the warranty period, so the clock matters: report a defect as soon as it appears and keep reporting it. On the newest MINIs, many fixes arrive as Remote Software Upgrades or dealer reprogramming, and the bulletin for HU-H6 head-unit faults even suggests customers perform resets themselves before coming in. If you do, write down the date and what happened, and still bring the car in so the complaint is recorded. Photograph warning messages and blank screens, and ask for a repair order at every visit.

A recall is not a claim

An open recall on your Mini is not, by itself, a lemon law case — and a recall that has already been repaired does not mean you don’t have one. Recalls are safety campaigns run by the manufacturer; lemon law claims turn on how your specific vehicle has performed under warranty. What matters is the record: how many times you brought the vehicle in for the same problem, how many days it has spent out of service, and whether the defect substantially impairs its use, value, or safety while covered by the manufacturer’s warranty.

A Mini that has been back to the dealer repeatedly for one persistent issue can qualify with no recall on file, while a vehicle with three open recalls may not qualify at all if each was repaired on the first visit. Repair-attempt and days-out-of-service thresholds vary from state to state, so the same facts can play out differently depending on where you bought or registered the vehicle. Keep every repair order — the paper trail is the case.

Frequently asked questions about MINI lemon law claims

Is my Cooper SE a lemon if it already got the battery recall update?

A completed recall does not end the question. If your 2020–2024 Cooper SE keeps showing high-voltage warnings or has needed battery work more than once, those repeat visits can support a claim. Recall 24V-612 was fixed with software, and recall 24V-302 involved water getting into the battery housing, so keep the repair orders from both. The 8-year/100,000-mile battery warranty also keeps MINI responsible for covered battery defects.

Do BMW’s integrated brake recalls apply to my MINI?

Only if your vehicle identification number is included. The integrated brake recalls 24V-104, 24V-697 and 26V-422 list specific 2025 MINI models, including the Cooper, Cooper S, Countryman S ALL4 and John Cooper Works Countryman ALL4. Check your VIN on NHTSA’s recall lookup or with a MINI dealer. If your car was included and brake or stability-control warnings returned after the repair, that repeat failure is what matters most for a claim.

My 2025 MINI’s screen keeps rebooting. Does a service bulletin help my claim?

It can. MINI’s December 2025 bulletin on the HU-H6 head unit confirms that resets, slow start-ups, and missing camera images, navigation or Bluetooth are known software problems. A bulletin does not prove your car is a lemon, but it rebuts any suggestion that the issue is your phone or your imagination. What makes the claim is your repair history: how many times you reported it, what the dealer did, and whether it came back.

Does a MINI recall repair count as a repair attempt?

A recall repair is still a repair of a defect under warranty, and it appears on a repair order. Whether a particular recall visit counts toward your state’s repair-attempt or days-out-of-service measures depends on the defect and the state, which is why every repair order matters. On a 2025 Countryman that has been through structure, seat belt and brake recalls, those visits can add up quickly.

My MINI is used. Is it still covered?

Possibly. MINI’s 4-year/50,000-mile warranty runs from the original in-service date, so a used MINI bought within that window still has the remaining coverage. A MINI Certified Pre-Owned vehicle adds one year with unlimited miles after the new car warranty ends, and the high-voltage battery in electric and plug-in hybrid MINIs carries 8-year coverage. How lemon law treats a used purchase varies by state, so the purchase date, mileage and remaining warranty all matter.
