Most common Mazda warranty defects

Mazda’s recent repeat-repair problems are concentrated in its newest vehicles: the CX-90 and CX-70, whose mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains have drawn a string of software recalls, along with automatic emergency braking and camera faults, air bag control software, the Mazda Connect infotainment system, and early-build issues on the CX-50 and CX-50 Hybrid. Because so many fixes are software updates, the question in a lemon law claim is usually whether the update actually ended the problem.

CX-90 and CX-70 loss of drive power and startup faults

Mazda’s large three-row and two-row crossovers have had a cluster of powertrain-software recalls. On 2024 CX-90 plug-in hybrids, recall 23V-719 addressed software that could shut down the engine and electric motor unexpectedly. In late 2024, Mazda filed a group of recalls: 24V-815 reprogrammed engine and powertrain control software on 2024 CX-90 and 2025 CX-70 models that could light warning lamps and lose drive power; 24V-817 updated PHEV inverter software that could cut power in EV mode; 24V-816 fixed an engine that might not restart after i-stop shut it off; and 24V-814 corrected a dash power supply unit that could disable the defroster, seat belt warning, 360° camera and PHEV battery cooling at startup. If your CX-90 power-loss recall repair did not hold, that matters.

CX-90 steering assist, chassis bolts and camera recalls

Beyond its powertrain, the 2024 CX-90 had several hardware and display recalls. Recall 24V-022 covers about 43,000 2024 CX-90s in which an assembly issue with the steering worm gear can cause a sudden loss of power steering assist; dealers replace a spring and re-grease the gear rather than the steering unit. An early recall, 23V-429, inspected a small number of 2024 CX-90s for missing or loose steering and suspension bolts that could let the steering shaft or upper control arms detach. Recall 23V-718 updated view-monitor software on 2024 CX-90 and Mazda3 models whose rearview, front or side camera images might not appear. Later, recall 25V-568 fixed an inaccurate fuel gauge on mild-hybrid CX-90 and CX-70 models. A steering assist failure that returns after the worm-gear repair is a recurring safety defect.

Smart Brake Support false braking and forward camera failures

Mazda’s automatic emergency braking, called Smart Brake Support, has drawn recalls in both directions — braking when it should not, and not working when it should. Recall 24V-349 reprogrammed about 10,000 2024 CX-90s whose brakes could activate suddenly after the system falsely detected objects. Recall 24V-649 replaced forward sensing cameras on certain 2024 Mazda3 and CX-30 and 2025 CX-50 models when a malfunction could disable automatic emergency braking and lane-keep assist and stop the high beams from dipping automatically. An older recall, 19V-907, addressed similar false activations on 2019–2020 Mazda3s. Phantom braking is difficult for a dealer to reproduce, so note the date, speed, location and what was ahead each time it happens.

Mazda Connect reboots and screen problems

Mazda Connect is the problem area that also reaches the CX-5. A Mazda service alert, first issued in 2019 and revised repeatedly through 2025, gives dealers a troubleshooting procedure for Mazda Connect concerns, including system reboots, on 2019–2026 Mazda3, 2020–2026 CX-30, 2021–2025 CX-5, 2023–2026 CX-50, 2024–2026 CX-90 and 2025–2026 CX-70 models, among others. The steps include updating the Connectivity Master Unit software, checking connected phones and USB devices, and replacing the unit if the problem continues. Notably, the alert asks for the date and time of each concern so Mazda can analyze system logs, and allows a car to be returned without repair while that data is reviewed.

Air bag control module software errors

Mazda has issued several recalls for the software that decides how and whether air bags deploy. Recall 25V-357 covers about 171,000 2024–2025 Mazda3 and CX-30 models whose air bag sensor unit can set an error code and deactivate the air bags after a low-battery condition; dealers reprogram or replace the unit. Recall 24V-695 updated software on 2016–2023 MX-5 Miatas because the front air bags could deploy with excessive force in a crash. A small 2025 recall corrected air bag module configuration on new CX-50 and CX-50 Hybrid vehicles. An air bag warning light that keeps coming back after the Mazda3 and CX-30 air bag recall is a safety defect that should be documented at every visit.

CX-50 and CX-50 Hybrid assembly recalls

The CX-50, and the CX-50 Hybrid added for 2025, have had several assembly-related recalls. Recall 25V-737 inspects front suspension bolts that may not have been tightened properly on 2025 CX-50 and CX-50 Hybrid models, which could let suspension parts or a wheel detach. Recall 25V-418 replaced the engine control module on certain 2025 CX-50 Hybrids whose shifter could move from Neutral to Drive without the brake pedal pressed. Earlier, recall 23V-275 replaced damaged anti-lock brake hydraulic units on certain 2022–2023 CX-30 and 2023 CX-50 models, and recall 25V-167 addressed accessory trailer hitches that could loosen on 2024–2025 CX-50s. Repeated chassis or brake visits in a new CX-50 deserve a careful paper trail.

Signs your Mazda may be a lemon

  • A CX-90 that loses power again. Your CX-90 or CX-70 has had the powertrain software updates and still shows warning lights or loses drive power.
  • Brakes that slam on with nothing ahead. Smart Brake Support keeps activating on its own, or the forward camera keeps disabling the system.
  • A Mazda Connect screen that keeps rebooting. Your CX-5, Mazda3 or CX-50 has had software updates or a new connectivity unit, and the reboots continue.
  • A recurring air bag warning light. The light returned after the air bag sensor recall on your Mazda3 or CX-30.
  • Steering assist that cuts out. Your CX-90 has lost power steering assist again after the worm-gear repair.

What Mazda’s warranty means for a claim

Mazda’s 2026 warranty booklet lists basic coverage of 36 months or 36,000 miles and powertrain coverage of 60 months or 60,000 miles. Mazda also carries a separate Safety Restraint System warranty of 60 months or 60,000 miles — relevant to the air bag control module recalls — and anti-perforation coverage of 60 months regardless of mileage. On hybrid and plug-in hybrid models, the high-voltage battery is covered for 96 months or 100,000 miles. In California and certain other states, the 2026 CX-70 PHEV’s battery is also warranted against capacity loss below 70% for 8 years or 100,000 miles.

Many Mazda fixes are software reprograms, and the Mazda Connect alert tells dealers that a car may be released with no repair while log data is analyzed. Write down the date and time of each failure and ask that it go on the repair order. Mazda’s booklet also says owners are required to use the BBB AUTO LINE program before seeking remedies under federal warranty law and, to the extent state law permits, before seeking state lemon law remedies.

A recall is not a claim

An open recall on your Mazda is not, by itself, a lemon law case — and a recall that has already been repaired does not mean you don’t have one. Recalls are safety campaigns run by the manufacturer; lemon law claims turn on how your specific vehicle has performed under warranty. What matters is the record: how many times you brought the vehicle in for the same problem, how many days it has spent out of service, and whether the defect substantially impairs its use, value, or safety while covered by the manufacturer’s warranty.

A Mazda that has been back to the dealer repeatedly for one persistent issue can qualify with no recall on file, while a vehicle with three open recalls may not qualify at all if each was repaired on the first visit. Repair-attempt and days-out-of-service thresholds vary from state to state, so the same facts can play out differently depending on where you bought or registered the vehicle. Keep every repair order — the paper trail is the case.

Frequently asked questions about Mazda lemon law claims

My CX-90 has had several recall updates. Is it a lemon?

It depends on what happened after the updates. The 2024 CX-90 has had recalls for loss of drive power, an engine that might not restart after i-stop, PHEV inverter software, startup electrical faults, steering assist and automatic braking. Recall work is warranty work, so each visit is part of your record. If the same problem returns after its fix, or the visits add up to many days out of service, a lemon law claim may be worth evaluating.

Is the CX-90 PHEV battery covered longer than the basic warranty?

Yes. Mazda’s 2026 booklet covers the high-voltage battery on hybrid and plug-in hybrid models for 96 months or 100,000 miles, well beyond the 36-month/36,000-mile basic warranty. Inverter and drive-power defects may fall under other coverages, including powertrain and emissions warranties. Check the booklet for your model year, since coverage details can differ between years and states.

The dealer says my Mazda Connect problem cannot be reproduced. What now?

Mazda’s own service alert anticipates this: it asks dealers to record the date and time of each concern and to collect system log data, and it allows the car to be released while that data is analyzed. Give the dealer exact dates and times, keep photos or video of the frozen or rebooting screen, and ask for a repair order every visit — even when the result is “no problem found.”

Do I have to use BBB AUTO LINE before suing Mazda?

Mazda’s warranty booklet says you must use BBB AUTO LINE before exercising rights under federal warranty law and, to the extent your state’s lemon law permits, before seeking lemon law remedies. The program is free and usually takes about 40 days, and its decision is not binding on you unless you accept it. Because that step can affect your later options, get advice before filing.

Does Mazda’s Safety Restraint warranty matter for air bag problems?

It can. Mazda covers safety restraint system components for 60 months or 60,000 miles, longer than the basic warranty. If your Mazda3 or CX-30 keeps showing an air bag warning after the 25V-357 recall, or the sensor unit has been replaced and the fault returns, those repairs may still be covered in year four or five. Keep every repair order that mentions the air bag light.

My CX-50 Hybrid has had several recalls. Are hybrid parts covered separately?

Mazda lists separate high-voltage battery coverage of 96 months or 100,000 miles for its hybrid models, in addition to the basic and powertrain warranties. The 2025 CX-50 Hybrid recalls have involved the engine control module, suspension bolts and air bag software, which fall under other coverages. Track each visit by date and mileage, and note whether any repair needed parts that were back-ordered.

Think your Mazda might be a lemon?

If your Mazda has been in the shop repeatedly for the same warranty problem, or has sat out of service for weeks, tell us what happened. The review is free, and there are no attorney’s fees unless we recover for you.
