Volkswagen is recalling 74,067 model-year 2022-2023 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport SUVs, and 2021-2023 Audi Q5 and Q5 Sportback SUVs. Due to a manufacturing defect, the engine connecting rod bearings may become damaged which can lead to engine failure. Engine failure could result in a vehicle stall, increasing the risk of a crash. Also, damaged connecting rod bearings could lead to an oil leak, increasing the risk of a fire.
Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on December 6, 2022. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 800-893-5298, Audi customer service at 800-253-2834, or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle safety hotline at 888-327-4236 to learn more.
To resolve the issue, dealers will inspect and replace the engine, as necessary.
Vehicle manufacturers are legally required to repair any recalled issues or replace the defective part for free under the Highway Safety Act of 1970. If the dealership refuses to fix the problem or attempts to charge you for the repair, contact the manufacturer immediately.
