Approximately 330 model-year 2020 BMW 330i and M340i sedans are being recalled due to an issue with the trunk. The interior trunk release cable may have been improperly installed, preventing the opening of the trunk from the inside. If a person were inside the trunk compartment, they may not be able to get out, increasing the risk of injury.

BMW will begin notifying owners on Dec. 16. Owners can call the automaker at 800-525-7417 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 to learn more.

To fix the problem, dealers will inspect and properly install the trunk release cable.

Vehicle manufacturers are legally required to repair any recalled issues or replace the defective part for free under the Highway Safety Act of 1970. If the dealership refuses to fix the problem or attempts to charge you for the repair, contact the manufacturer immediately.
