Approximately 14,900 model-year 2019-20 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 pickup trucks equipped with Rugged Liner-brand tri-fold hard tonneau covers are being recalled because the attachment system used to mount the hard tonneau cover to the bed rails may not have been properly installed. As a result, the cover may fly off while the vehicle is in motion, becoming a road hazard and increasing the risk of a crash.

Chevrolet and GMC manufacturer GM will begin notifying owners on June 1. Owners can call Chevrolet at 800-630-2438, GMC at 800-462-8782, or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 to learn more.

To fix the problem, dealers will replace the tonneau rails and clamps. They will also add tethers to prevent tonneau covers from detaching while driving.

Vehicle manufacturers are legally required to repair any recalled issues or replace the defective part for free under the Highway Safety Act of 1970. If the dealership refuses to fix the problem or attempts to charge you for the repair, contact the manufacturer immediately.
