Approximately 3,000 model-year 2019-20 BMW M5 coupes, model-year 2020 M8 coupes and convertibles, and M8 Gran Coupes are being recalled due to transmission harness issues. The transmission wiring harness can become damaged, resulting in an electrical short circuit that can cause the transmission to shift to Neutral, increasing the risk of a crash.
BMW will begin notifying owners on Feb. 3. Owners can call the automaker at 800-525-7417 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 to learn more.
To fix the problem, dealers will inspect and replace damaged transmission harnesses as necessary.
Vehicle manufacturers are legally required to repair any recalled issues or replace the defective part for free under the Highway Safety Act of 1970. If the dealership refuses to fix the problem or attempts to charge you for the repair, contact the manufacturer immediately.
