Approximately 28,900 model-year 2017-20 Honda Ridgeline pickup trucks equipped with Honda Genuine Accessory Tonneau Covers are being recalled because wind resistance may cause the cover to flip and buckle if it is not properly secured in the open or closed position. If this occurs, the hinges between the center and rear panel may deform, possibly allowing the rear panel to separate from the vehicle and become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

Honda will begin notifying owners on Oct. 26. Owners can call the automaker at 888-234-2138 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 to learn more.

To fix the problem, dealers will install tethers onto any Honda Genuine Accessory Tonneau Cover to prevent panel separation. Additionally, warning labels will be applied and an updated accessory user’s information manual will be provided.

Vehicle manufacturers are legally required to repair any recalled issues or replace the defective part for free under the Highway Safety Act of 1970. If the dealership refuses to fix the problem or attempts to charge you for the repair, contact the manufacturer immediately.
