Mitsubishi has announced a recall on approximately 26,000 model-year 2017-18 Mirage G4 sedans due to software issues. The internal acceleration sensor in the supplemental restraint system’s electronic control unit may misinterpret vibrations, such as from poor road conditions or a flat tire, as a malfunction and disable all the vehicle’s airbags, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

Mitsubishi began notifying owners on May 24. Owners can call the automaker at 888-327-4236 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 to learn more.

To fix the problem, dealers will reprogram the ECU software.

Vehicle manufacturers are legally required to repair any recalled issues or replace the defective part for free under the Highway Safety Act of 1970. If the dealership refuses to fix the problem or attempts to charge you for the repair, contact the manufacturer immediately.
