Approximately 2,800 model-year 2016-18 Ford Focus cars equipped with a 1.0-liter Fox GTI engine and six-speed manual transmission are being recalled due to issues with the clutch. The clutch may fracture, resulting in damage to the transmission assembly and possibly a transmission fluid leak. The presence of transmission fluid near a hot engine and ignition increases the risk of a fire.

Ford began notifying owners on Jan. 7. Owners can call the automaker at 866-436-7332 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4235 to learn more.

To fix the problem dealers will update vehicles with software that detects and prevents prolonged clutch slip and replace the clutch if necessary.

Vehicle manufacturers are legally required to repair any recalled issues or replace the defective part for free under the Highway Safety Act of 1970. If the dealership refuses to fix the problem or attempts to charge you for the repair, contact the manufacturer immediately.
