BMW of North America is recalling certain model-year 2013-2018 328d, 328d xDrive, 2014-2018 328d Sports Wagon, 328d xDrive Sports Wagon, 2014-2016 535d, 535d xDrive, 2015 740Ld xDrive, 2015-2017 X3 xDrive28d SAV, and 2014-2017 X5 xDrive35d SAV diesel vehicles equipped with an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) module with an integrated cooler due to a fire risk. The EGR cooler may leak internally, causing coolant to mix with diesel engine soot, resulting in smoldering particles which could melt the intake manifold, increasing the risk of a fire.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on January 12, 2022. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 800-525-7417 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle safety hotline at 888-327-4236 to learn more.

To resolve the issue, dealers will replace the EGR cooler and inspect the intake manifold, replacing it as necessary.

Vehicle manufacturers are legally required to repair any recalled issues or replace the defective part for free under the Highway Safety Act of 1970. If the dealership refuses to fix the problem or attempts to charge you for the repair, contact the manufacturer immediately.
