Ford has announced a recall on approximately 57,400 model-year 2012 and 2017  Focus cars equipped with 2.0-liter GDI engines and model-year 2013-14 Focus ST cars equipped with 2.0-liter GDTI engines due to issues with the powertrain control module. In a previous recall, the powertrain control module software used to service vehicles was incomplete. The cars did not receive the intended calibration software that will detect a malfunctioning canister purge valve, which may become stuck in an open position. This could cause an excessive vacuum in the fuel vapor management system, deforming the fuel tank, which may result in an engine stall while driving without warning or the ability to restart the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash. Also, the driver may observe a malfunction indicator light, inaccurate fuel gauge indication or other drivability concerns.

Ford did not immediately announce an owner-notification schedule, though owners were notified for the previous recall on Dec 10, 2018. Owners can call the automaker at 888-436-7332 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 to learn more.

To fix the problem, dealers will reprogram the powertrain control module and check for fault codes, replacing the canister purge valve as needed. If the valve is replaced, dealers will inspect and replace the carbon canister, fuel tank, and fuel delivery module as necessary.

Vehicle manufacturers are legally required to repair any recalled issues or replace the defective part for free under the Highway Safety Act of 1970. If the dealership refuses to fix the problem or attempts to charge you for the repair, contact the manufacturer immediately.
