Approximately 925, 200 model-year 2007-11 Dodge Nitro SUVs and model-year 2008-10 Chrysler Town and Country and Dodge Grand Caravan minivans are being recalled because certain airbag cover clips may loosen and disengage over time. In the event of a driver-side airbag deployment, the clips and/or plastic emblems they are meant to secure may act as projectiles, increasing the risk of injury.

Chrysler and Dodge parent company Fiat Chrysler Automobiles began notifying owners on Aug. 26. Owners can call the automaker at 800-853-1403 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 to learn more.

To fix the problem, dealers will replace the airbag cover. Until the recall repair is completed, FCA strongly advises against tampering with the plastic emblems attached to the airbag cover located in the center of the steering wheel.

Vehicle manufacturers are legally required to repair any recalled issues or replace the defective part for free under the Highway Safety Act of 1970. If the dealership refuses to fix the problem or attempts to charge you for the repair, contact the manufacturer immediately.
