Approximately 62,800 model-year 2000-2001 Audi TT coupes and roadsters, and model-year 2000-02 A4 and S4 sedans are being recalled due to airbag issues. The airbag inflators may absorb moisture, causing the airbag to deploy improperly in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Interim notification letters informing owners of the safety risk will be sent on Aug. 20. A second notice will be mailed when remedy parts become available in mid-October. Owners can call the automaker at 800-253-2834 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle safety hotline at 888-327-4236 to learn more.

To remedy the issue, dealers will replace the driver frontal airbag inflator with an alternative inflator.

Vehicle manufacturers are legally required to repair any recalled issues or replace the defective part for free under the Highway Safety Act of 1970. If the dealership refuses to fix the problem or attempts to charge you for the repair, contact the manufacturer immediately.
