Approximately 139,000 model-year 1998-2000 Toyota RAV4 SUVs, model-year 1998-99 RAV4 EV electric SUVs, model-year 1998-99 Celica coupes and model-year 1997-98 Supra coupes are being recalled due to airbag issues. The front driver-side airbag inflators with non-azide propellant were manufactured without appropriate seals. Air and moisture may leak into the inflators over an extended period, causing propellant degradation and an abnormal deployment in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Toyota will begin notifying owners by late March. Owners can call the automaker at 888-270-9371 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 to learn more.

A remedy is currently under development.
